Data Management On the Web — A New Concept

Database Information Management Applications that were traditionally done as desktop applications can now be created as web sites!!!

  • Using the latest, state-of-the-art web programming techniques, I can create a web site that has almost all of the the functionality of a traditional desktop database, information management program. Your web site will be able to do almost anything that a desktop database management program, such as MS Access or Filemaker, can do.
  • It will run on any computer, anywhere, that has a modern web browser and an Internet connection. And unlike applications written using MS Access or Filemaker, no special or expensive software is needed on each computer that runs the application.
  • No in-house network is needed; web site applications are inherently multi-user, network applications that support any number of simultaneous users.
  • Updating your application on every desktop is automatic and instaneous whenever the web site is updated.
  • The speed of web site applications actually rivals that of desktop applications!

Databases and Information Management

Information Management is a necessary task performed by every business and organization. Certainly, the collected business information needs to be selected and presented in useful ways in various reports. But an information management application, be it a traditional desktop application or web site, needs to do much more:

  • Each data item must be consistent — a phone number and area code must be exactly 10 digits.
  • There must not be any duplicate data — there should only be one main record for each person.
  • There should not be any "orphaned" data — every phone number has an owner and exactly one owner.
  • The user interface, the data entry forms, must be user-friendly — your local jargon is used to name fields and the form works in an obvious an expected manner.
  • Because your needs will change over time, the design of the data needs to be flexible in order to respond to your changing needs.

Accomplishing the above is not always a trivial or straight-forward task and requires that a thorough design of the database be performed at the outset. With over 15 years of information management experience, I can assure you that the analysis of your data and the resulting design of your database will reflect and support your data requirements.
